A
political science professor at Vanderbilt University says a new campus
policy that restricts Christian groups' freedoms should serve as a
wake-up call to all Americans.
According
to Dr. Carol Swain, the Nashville-based university has instituted a
policy that forbids religious organizations on campus from requiring
their leaders to adhere to the beliefs and doctrines held by the group.
Officials have decided that five on-campus Christian groups are in
violation of the school's non-discrimination policy. So, the Christian
Legal Society, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Graduate Christian
Fellowship, the fraternity Beta Upsilon Chi, and sorority Sigma Phi
Lambda have been placed on "provisional status" and risk being shut
down. Dr. Swain says that is likely a sign of a bigger effort.
"I
believe that there's a move afoot … to secularize the campus religion
so that you end up with some feel-good group that … cannot say anything
negative that might hurt someone else's feelings," she warns.
So, the political science professor, who recently wrote a book titled Be the People: A Call to Reclaim America's Faith and Promise, says and stop that attempt.
"I feel that it's very much a time for Americans to wake up, and I
believe that some of us are not even aware that little by little,
secularism and atheists have chipped away at things that we have pretty
much taken for granted," Swain laments. "It's like nothing is safe
anymore."
