Urge your Representative to protect the symbols and traditions of ChristmasDecember 9, 2011Dear Friend, Representative Doug Lamborn (R-CO), a Member of the Congressional Prayer Caucus, has introduced a resolution (H.Res.489) which expresses the sense of the House of Representatives that the symbols and traditions of Christmas should be protected for use by those who celebrate Christmas. The resolution specifically points out that the House of Representatives: (1) recognizes the importance of the symbols and traditions of Christmas; (2) strongly disapproves of attempts to ban references to Christmas; and (3) expresses support for the use of these symbols and traditions by those who celebrate Christmas. During the Christmas season each year, there are increasing efforts to remove religious symbols and references from the holiday. Just this year, for example, there have been challenges to public nativity scenes in Athens, TX; Prineville, OR; and Ellwood City, PA. Additionally, a cancer center in South Carolina banned all religious Christmas decorations, and the decorated tree in the Rhode Island statehouse is being called a "holiday tree" instead of a "Christmas tree." TAKE ACTION Urge your Representative to sign on as a co-sponsor of H.Res.489 in support of protecting symbols and traditions of Christmas. In addition, ask him to contact House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform Chairman Darrell Issa to put H.Res.489 on the "Fast Track" so that it can be voted on before Christmas. |
